What is a Brazilian Blowout?

What is a Brazilian Blowout? The Brazilian Blowout is a type of liquid keratin treatment that bonds to your hair. This liquid formula can effectively seal cuticles and loose ends, diminish your frizz, and provide protection against external and environmental hazards. Aptly named, the treatment DID originate in Brazil, and uses many ingredients that are indigenous to the country. Combining annatto seed, açai berry and camu camu, the treatment will leave your hair hydrated and ready to tackle the day. This combination of powerful ingredients can create a powerful, glossy shine, make your hair more resilient to heat styling and also make your hair less frizzy.

How does a Brazilian Blowout Work?

Keratin is the main ingredient in a Brazilian blowout, and if you’re wondering, keratin is a protein that is naturally found in hair. During a Brazilian blowout, the keratin solution is applied to the hair and heat is applied afterwards to seal it in. The reason why heat is applied is to activate the keratin, which then helps bonds the keratin to your hair in order to smoothen out the cuticles and reduce frizz. The final result is straighter, shinier and more manageable hair.

The Brazilian Blowout Process

The Brazilian blowout process typically takes around two to three hours to complete. Here’s a step-by-step guide to what you can expect during the treatment:

  1. Consultation: Your stylist will consult with you to determine your hair type and the results you want to achieve.
  2. Shampoo: Your hair will be shampooed to remove any dirt, oil, or product buildup.
  3. Application: The keratin solution will be applied to your hair in small sections.
  4. Drying: Your hair will be blow-dried and straightened using a flat iron.
  5. Rinse: The excess solution will be rinsed out of your hair.
  6. Condition: A conditioning treatment will be applied to your hair to help seal in the keratin.
  7. Final Drying: Your hair will be blow-dried once again to ensure it is fully dry and straight.

Keratin treatment or Brazilian Blowout?

Both treatments effectively do the same thing: both keratin treatments and Brazilian Blowouts eliminate frizz and smooth out the hair. In fact, there’s not much of a difference between the two. Both treatments smooth the hair, remove frizz, decrease blow-drying time and enhance shine. However, there are minor differences. Brazilian Blowouts tend to leave your natural texture in while also removing frizz. In a traditional Keratin treatment, it calms the natural curls of your hair more and also takes away visibly more volume than a Brazilian Blowout.

Are Brazilian Blowouts safe?

This type of treatment works on all hair types, and actually improves moisture levels and shine. Many people are concerned with some formulas that contain formaldehyde. However, there isn’t any more of this ingredient in the treatment than would be in your nail polish. The only way breakage would occur is if a stylist goes too hard and long on the flat iron. All of our blowout specialists are highly trained to prevent this from happening. The process does not take very long. Overall, it is only about an hour to an hour and a half. Working section by section, the formula is applied root to tip, then blow-dried and finally heated by a flat iron.

How long does it last?

A Brazilian blowout should last about three to four months. Once you see the treatment start to dissipate from around the hairline, that’s when you know it’s time to get your treatment redone.

Aftercare for Brazilian Blowouts

To ensure that your Brazilian blowout lasts as long as possible, it’s important to take proper care of your hair after the treatment. Here are some tips for aftercare:

  • Wait at least 48 hours before washing your hair
  • Avoid getting your hair wet or sweating excessively for the first two days
  • Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to avoid stripping the keratin from your hair
  • Avoid heat styling tools as much as possible
  • Use a silk pillowcase to reduce frizz and hair breakage
