So you’ve spent the time sitting in the salon chair for roughly two hours while your keratin hair treatment was applied, but how do you ensure that your hair will continue to look this good for longer than two months? Keratin treatments have exponentially grown in popularity over the past couple of years because of the amazing things they can do for frizzy and un-tame-able hair. However, they are expensive and you do have to get them reapplied every three to four months.
Rather than spending over $300.00 every couple of months, how about we share with you some tips of prolonging that silky smooth hair a little longer?
Tips for Prolonging your Keratin Treatment
- Use the shampoo and conditioner given to you. Each type of keratin treatment comes with its own type of shampoo and conditioner – and not all are created equal. The materials given to you by your stylist have to same components as the keratin proteins that were applied in the original treatment. The shampoo is the most important part – the wrong shampoo can strip the treatment from your hair far faster than the one given to you which is meant to preserve it.
It’s kind of like when you get a spray tan. Overtime, you’ll notice the tan begin to fade because you’re washing away the dye – same concept.
- Stay out of the water. Sodium chloride is one of the biggest culprits in terms of stripping any type of treatment done to your hair, regardless if it’s a keratin treatment, hair coloring, or a perm. So, you want to do your best to stay out of the ocean and pools, even if they’re saline-treated. If you NEED to get your hair wet, or it’s almost inevitable, get it wet with tap water first, this will give your hair a little bit more of a coating because it’s already saturated – giving your hair less of a chance to absorb the pool or salt water.
- Don’t avoid getting another treatment. If you like how your hair looks after the initial treatment, be content with the fact that you will have to get another one to achieve the desired results. For some, they get their second treatment after eight weeks, then 10, 12, up to 14 weeks so you somewhat beat the treatment into your hair.
